wonder how low the prices can go

Making silicon wafers requires a lot of time and energy, and the silicon waste only adds to the expense. Silicon costs about $17 per kilogram, meaning that about $9 worth of silicon is wasted in making solar cells because the process ruins approximately half the silicon.

But the Fraunhofer researchers say they’ve solved both the waste and energy problems. “[W]e are reducing material losses by 50 percent while using 80 percent less energy,” said Stefan Janz, the lead ISE researcher on the project.

Until now, making a solar cell starts with impure silicon that’s liquefied, then purified with the addition of chlorine, creating a material known as chlorosilane. With the addition of hydrogen, chlorosilane becomes highly pure chunks of polysilicon.

I know solar has come down in price a lot over the past decade.  We are going to spend $3,750 to extend power from the pole by our barn to our new place.  Looked in to solar and the cost/benefit was not even close to being there.  I think...not that I am right...that solar will still drop by 50% over the next decade.

Like I have said before, what can we control for expenses?? We are building smaller = lower taxes due to lower sq ft...HTM and earth berming = lower heating need and lower cooling (if any)...coal/wood heat = lower heating costs...LED lighting...gardening, canning, chickens, orchard, and such...

Doing what we can with what we have and what we know...

Totally agree with you, our energy usage is pretty minimal, just over a cord of wood a year, 8 gallons of propane a month, 60 dollar electric bill, would need to see a huge drop in cost for it to make financial sense.
