I was always curious about the use of the black metal as well, I guess if the cob was strong enough and it rotted out it should keep the shape, I wonder if galvanized would be better, I wouldn't think it would get hot enough for offgassing to be a concern

K,  I was thinking the same thing.  When I was in the barn today I was looking at the empty beer kegs and how heavy they are...seems like they would work well.

Not sure where the 4 empty full kegs and the pony keg came from...they just ended up in the barn.  Remember the big old fat round barrel kegs? I have one of those...it's damn heavy.

Anyhow...there are couple things I would changed...like the steel pipe that will rust out in a few years (encase it in concrete and you have that taken care of.)...But I don't see how Codes Office would let one of these go in.  Very simple and cool idea though.
