The double chute is a interesting layout. Is the lower chute just a air draw?

that's what I'm thinking, seems like that top would get pretty hot and be a great cooking surface as well, could enclose it like this

I believe the bottom to be mostly for ash/waste removal. I have seen a couple builds where they use this double chamber configuration.

wonder if it would make more sense to remove that bottom piece and just put a hinged door on the other side

It must be really heavy or the person moving it wanted to scratch the floor, all I keep seeing is that big scratch.
