Sweet; I read through all of it, thank you :)

I was wondering about your foundation depth. I thought you would have to go a lot deeper than that in maine... any reason that you are only down maybe 1ft? I could be mis-interpreting the pictures.

the only place that is that shallow is the front of the house, the sides and back are under 6 feet of backfilled ledge, so there is no issues. Even if we didn't backfill it we would never have a issue with heaving. We built up a 3 foot pad of ledge and backfilled the retaining wall with sand. We also put drainage all through out the pad and around it, to take any water away. , you need 2 things for frost, water soaked soil and freezing temperatures, we took the water soaked soil out of the equation

Cool, thank you. I hope to build something similar to yours someday, earth sheltered, high mass etc. I have a lot of the carpentry/electrical/plumbing skills but not much in foundation and concrete, so trying to learn all I can.

EXCELLENT work man! I just finished reading the entire five pages and am impressed! You sure did a lot of work in a short amount of time! We are looking to do something similar in the future and we are wondering how things are holding up for you. Looks like you have no central heat or air and do OK with the cold winters in Maine by just using the wood stove? WOW! We are interested in the square footage of your home and also how you compare living in an earth sheltered, (bermed home), vs. conventional. Do you think this is the way to go to save energy? Thanks for any input!
