Looking to kill all snappers and freshen up the water in our pond, been pricing different pumps and seems just a basement sewage pump should work shouldn't it?

Something like this can handle up to 2 inch solids

was looking at this but it can only handle .9 inch solids

It should work... Sometimes you can get a screen to help keep out the sticks and such

was thinking of getting a plastic barrel, drilling holes in it and setting the pump inside of that in the water to help keep the big stuff out

yeah that could help quite a bit. Maybe think about wrapping the barrel in something like window screen too if you're still having problems.
