Hey everyone. I'm not quite the homesteader yet, but I've been researching it for a few years. Planning on buying a small house over the winter. I will have some left over money and my biggest question or concern is which projects do I do first. I have so many I want to do, but I know realistically it will take a while to implement. Plus, I can't afford to do everything all at once anyway. Trying to figure out what order to do everything. Keep in mind the lot is one acre. The area is very rocky and I'll likely need a dump truck full of topsoil to help level the area and start growing something other than the weeds that are there now. Here's just some of what I hope to do. What would you make the priority?

rain barrel collection system

raised beds for veggies

pergola with grape vines

a few varieties of fruit trees

stone/gravel paths with stepping stones

build an outdoor/solar dehydrator

planting berry bushes

chickens and coup

solar panels on roof

Any help, suggestions, advice, or what you'd differently a second time around, would be much appreciated!

Thanks. Jim

welcome @jiu-jitsu-jim , I would focus on the grapes, fruit trees and bushes, they will take several years to produce, then work on the raised beds. That should keep you plenty busy for a while, then get some chickens, careful though, they are gateway animals, next thing you know you'll be behind the 7-11 trying to score some cattle!

Welcome to the boards! You can do a ton with 1 acre, if you lay it out right. I agree with KVR; get your grapes/fruit trees going, they will take a few seasons before you see fruit. I'd follow that with some raised beds and then perhaps a chicken tractor.

Welcome aboard; looking forward to hearing more about your homestead!

good point with layout, I would spend some time with that, there are a few things I wish we had done different 10 years ago that is too late to change now

Thanks. I'm really excited to get in there come spring time and finally get my hands dirty. A few trees will have to come down to get more sunlight, but all the trees that come down will be replaced with an edible tree. My goal is to use the space and not have a big lawn to cut every week.
