maybe it is all smoke and mirrors

The start date for production of a new three-wheeled vehicle at a plant in Shreveport has been pushed back — again.

Production at Elio Motors had been slated to start by March 2015. Now, it is expected to begin in first half of 2016, according to The Times of Shreveport.

Founder Paul Elio made the announcement Thursday. Elio again blamed production delays on lack of funding.

Elio says he's raised more than $65 million in capital so far, but he needs $230 million more to begin production.

Meanwhile, the startup automaker still is taking advanced orders for the car. Elio says more than 38,000 reservations have been made so far. He will continue to take reservations while production dollars are being nailed down.

A car forum I'm on has essentially shredded Elio to bits with some devastatingly sound arguments. I'm inclined to agree with them.

I like the idea of the Elio -- obviously lots of people do, but it's never going to happen. They don't even have a working engine yet and production was slated for 2 months from now? The push back IS over funding, but its not the car being funded, it's Paul Elio's golden parachute that needs more money.

One member linked to an article that compared the Elio, with the 3 wheeled Dale from the 1970's which turned out to be a scam.

The sad thing is, according to some members of the other forum, technologically speaking, the car and 84 mpg are both possible, just not for $8400, and not by Paul Elio. All his focus is on marketing fluff.

Based on that, I'm out.

Doubtful unless it was literally cobbled together with 2x4's on the inside and undercarriage. There was a video linked from the article of the Dale in an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. The video had a few  images of the Dale's "construction". Unfortunately the video was removed. I could not find another.

looks like you are right, it's driving me nuts trying to remember what it was now

Only three Dales were ever built: two mockups and one running prototype. All three still exist, two in the hands of private collectors and one at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
