ET,  "First, a temperature swing made him sick?  I thought illness was caused by viruses and bacteria." yes they do...but there are other things: heat stroke, hypothermia...things that can mess you up in a hurry...didn't see the episode last night so I don't know the particulars...but a temperature swing can be a real issue especially if you have some cardiac issues and/or on some types of meds...things like Raynauds can hit in the middle of July (it is not just a cold weather 'thing')  and really take someone out of the game (depending on the severity of course)...who knows...maybe he just needed a hug?

Basically, they were in the desert.  It got cold overnight, and he caught a chill and it almost took him out of the game.  Or at least that's how it was scripted.

...could of really been a bit of hypothermia...especially in the desert...I would think they would use it as a teaching/education moment if that's what it really was...I know Cody and Joe used to talk about it a lot...a drop of a few degrees in your core temperature can really put you in jeopardy and kill you quicker than you think.

Cody has a great book "98.6 Degrees, The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive"  I think K has read it too...It's a great book to have on hand...actually all of his books are good and they clued me into to a number of things I didn't know about.

Here is a link to the Mayo Clinic Info on Hypothermia...good info.
