I'm assuming these are more for charging batteries than for running appliances directly, right?

you would be correct, this would be like a trickle charge. The most important part is downsizing your load first and then try and meet the decreased demand. This little system would be good for say a shed with some led lights and a radio. But Imagine if you had 40 of them, not just 1 or 2.

I remember seeing a much larger helical turbine on the roof of an office building, but it was turned horizontal. But the program wasn't very specific on its output.

there in lies the issue with alternative energy, people are trying to make up for our current consumption instead of downsizing our needs. It will never work.

my father and I were talking about that, he was looking at the video and made a comment about how he would change it, he lurks on here ,I told him to post his Ideas on how to improve it, the man is a mechanical genius. He has a late 70's kz motorcycle that has quad carbs, he decided he got tired of adjusting each carb so he built a manifold out of copper pipe and ordered a triumph carb off ebay and runs his cycle off that
