From 2012 through to early 2016 bubbles of methane gas have been observed escaping from the river.[13] The discharges vary in intensity and are most likely linked to a fault line. The seeps have been monitored by scientists contracted by Origin Energy but, according to the gas industry, the cause remains unknown.[13] One of the likely scenarios proposed is that the regional and broad-scale de-watering of the Walloon Coal Measures down-dip from the seeps, in the enormous gas projects which have been populating the area around the Condamine River since the late 2000s, are the root cause. This issue was brought to the forefront of media attention after spectacular awareness raising by New South Wales Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham, in which he set alight methane gas bubbling from the riverbed, linking pollution of the river to the dewatering of the enormous gas field projects through which the river flows. He also mentions "Fracking" as likely to be contributing to the problem.[14][15] Origin Energy, the company whom owns a majority of the coal seam gas wells in the Condamine area, refutes the claim, with a spokesperson stating that the nearest fracking projects were located several kilometers away from the river.[16] They conceded, however, that "we are starting to see more bubbles than there used to be", which raises further questions of the gas company.[16]
