I want to do this with a permanent magnet motor for my battery bank. I think cranking out over 48V consistently is going to be hard, however.

you can, but probably at low amperage. lets calculate it:

maintaining 100W power average is not that hard when biking (some exercice bikes tell you how many Watts you are generating).

P=V*I

100 = 48 * I

I = 100/48

I = 2.08A

that is probably not going to really charge your batteries much (and i don't even take the effeciency of the motor in consideration)

Thanks for the help with the math. Our battery bank is ~225 amp hours at 48V. When my solar panels are charging the bank they can provide anywhere from 0 to ~1400 watts and the amps are ~90 or so. So I think charging at 2 amps or less may not give me the best charge. I wonder how people do it at 12 volts, since 100/12 = 8.33 amps which still doesn't sound like a whole lot.

How is the Solar setup working for you pork, I know you had mentioned adding some more panels. Did you install it yourself or have a company install it for you?
