I have seen some how-to's on these and they look interesting. I think it would fit our lifestyle here in the great white north because we process firewood anyway and could use some of the secondary heat to warm up an outbuilding or some such. Our house is offgrid with solar and running a wood gassifier generator would provide the power we need on the days without sun.
They do look clunky to set up but since it will be stationary maybe it will be a little more straight foward.

I've also thought about it. It would be really good to have in a pinch, like for example a storm of enormous magnitude wreaking havoc over the entire east coast, making travel dangerous and fuel practically non-existent. Even if you can't get gas you can still run your wood powered genny.

If anyone has a very specific "how-to" I will research it more. I am not creative enough or have enough free time to experiment much on my own but can follow a how-to and give it a try. There is a guy semi-local to me who was interested in these, too. I need to join forces with him.
here is a couple threads on some different designs
