will this be the final push to make electric vehicles a viable option for everyone?

Ford Motor Co will develop 13 new hybrid and electric vehicles by 2020, announcing on Thursday plans to invest $4.5 billion in the programme that aims to make 40% of the company’s fleet electric or hybrid, up form 13% today.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Fields also said the company will attempt to compete in the ride hailing industry, with the likes of Uber.

wonder what the strain on the grid is going to be if everything is electric, heck there are rolling brownouts now due to AC demand in the summer in areas of the country

if anything I think it will only promote to the logical step of local energy production. If most people have electric cars, it stands to reason that they will also have solar panels on their homes (if they own). I also think that free car charging will become a necessary amenity for renters, and I look for businesses to convert parking to covered parking with solar array banks and charging stations. The free market at its finest.

looks like Google and Ford are teaming up, wonder if the EV's will have the self driving features

Google and Ford will create a joint venture to build self-driving vehicles with Google’s technology, a huge step by both companies toward a new business of automated ride sharing, Yahoo Autos has learned.

According to three sources familiar with the plans, the partnership is set to be announced by Ford at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. By pairing with Google, Ford gets a massive boost in self-driving software development; while the automaker has been experimenting with its own systems for years, it only revealed plans this month to begin testing on public streets in California. Google has 53 test vehicles on the road in California and Texas, with 1.3 million miles logged in autonomous driving.

By pairing with Ford, the search-engine giant avoids spending billions of dollars and several years that building its own automotive manufacturing expertise would require. Earlier this year, Google co-founder Sergey Brin said the company was looking for manufacturing partners that would use the company’s self-driving system, which it believes could someday eliminate the roughly 33,000 annual deaths on U.S. roads.
