groin, doesn't the black locust have 2 inch spikes on them? good security hedge as well imo

Yeah they do. Actually on pg 156 of Ben Falk's The Resilient Farm and Homestead, he gives a detail of a living security fence using black locust and seaberry. In his opinion, only hawthorne is a more fierce living fence, but it grows at a slower rate. I think Im going to put this into practice on my property using it as a fuelwood hedge and living fence. We have one little corridor between properties that the deer use as a cut through. I think if I went and fenced it, there might be some complaining from the neighbors, but if I strategically planted a hedgerow it would reroute the deer around my property.

What a great idea. I have a lot of black locust on one part of my farm. It reseads very easily. And I love the idea of coppicing for firewood!

Do you use poplar for firewood? It seems to burn too quickly for me. Don't get me wrong, if I have it I'll burn it. But if I'm thinking about growing it, locust sounds much better to me!

awesome book for cold climate permaculture. Im still getting through that and Paradise Lot, which is another really good one for the Northeast.
