For any who may not know, Cansolair is basically a solar space heater built out of soda or beer cans. I learned about this a while ago and decided to supplement my home heating with a couple of units.

The Good:

Free Heat! It really works. It cranks out some nice heat, even warmer than my heat pumps!

It's Quiet, but loud enough to know it's working. Just a tiny fan pumps the heat out of the unit.

It's Simple! Really not a very complex unit. Not much to break or go bad, so I expect it to last a while. If you're motivated you can build one of these yourself pretty easily.. You don't have to be an engineer or mechanic to do so.

The Bad:

No sun... No heat... It works pretty well under mild cloud cover, but without sun this thing is not doing anything. Obviously that means no heat at night from these.

Any questions, lemme know!

Here is a vid to get you started

What type of fan and thermostat did you use? I was gonna make one out of 4" dryer pipes, but I think the cans will heat a bit faster.

I took the easy route and purchased my cansolair, so not exactly sure what kind of thermostat is in there. I know you can use basic ones found at hardware stores.
