How long does the battery in your car take to recharge after starting while driving around from the alternator?......
What if you had 10 batteries in your trunk/back of vehicle hooked to your vehicles alternator and used your daily commute to and from work to charge your batteries? Would 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour home do the trick?
Lets say to mount all your equipment in the garage or side of house, all you had to do is plug in your vehicle and run your house from the battery set-up.
Could your vehicle take the place of solar panels or turbines on a commute you have to make anyways? If possible rainy and windless days wouldn't effect your setup.
Let us open the think tank
Yeah I know the extra battery weight would hurt your gas mileage.

There was a show on cable called The Colony. It's a quasi-reality show where they get a group of people together to survive a staged SHTF scenario. In the second season, they hooked up a car alternator to a homemade wind turbine. Was pretty neat. However with your idea, I think there are several issues. First, I don't think car batteries can provide long, sustained heavy draw. Secondly, your alternator powers everything in your car. Not sure how the extra draw would affect your alternator or your car.

hmmm... well maybe the addition of a second alt. with a longer serp belt. or added pulley on alt and a second belt. Deep cycle batteries could be charged from a alt. The rpms is what will charge those batteries, I saw the wind turbine that was posted here with the alt on it, but it spun slowly.
My father who is a mechanic always told me it takes 7 miles of driving to recharge a dead battery, not sure how accurate. I know of someone who has a close set up to your design. He was able to get a bunch of forklift batteries and made a battery bank with them. He has a separate bank for his house and his garage. He doesn't use his car to charge them but a small generator. He has to run his genny once every week or so to charge his bank and he runs his whole house off the bank while only using a gallon or two of gas a week. The guy is a friend of a friend, I'll see if I can get a hold of him and get some feedback on his system

That sounds like a nice set-up he has.
I wonder if using an alternator to charge batteries are the way to go. I can think of a few ways to make an alt spin using different methods, but as we saw in that water barrel windmill video the alt spinning wasn't creating a whole lot.
Here is a way to make an alt spin.
Using a 10w pv panel on a dc water pump, shooting the water stream onto a water wheel attached to a alt.
I have seen some small garden/koi ponds with water wheels and trickling springs in peoples yards but most use the 115v pumps to pump the water
