I wonder if having the traditional chimney a) makes it code compliant and b) has any side effects since it goes straight up?

I came across this with some info on code, seems it is recognized by the portland building code and they give some suggestions how to approach your local CE about it

Thanks for the info. If we ever build an addition on the west side of our house I want to try to incorporate one of these. This is the nicest one I have seen and I think my wife would agree.
