Wow, I had no idea the Leaf and Volt had numbers that high. Nor did I know the Smart cars were up that high either. I could have sworn they were totally running off gasoline.

Anyhow, cool read. Once I get done with school and pay off the loans, I think I will be going this route for a new vehicle.

They must not have included diesels. My wife’s new 2013 Passat TDI was pushing 50 mpg before we put the studded snows on. The window sticker claimed 40 but I can beat that in sport mode while having fun racing around. It’s no Corvette but it is fast and fun to drive. I spoke with my friends at the local diesel tuner shop and they theorized if someone could break the VW codes to eliminate the diesel particulate filter, EGR and urea tank it would be capable of near 70 mpg with the new engines efficiencies.

Years ago I did a loan for a guy who was employed in the fuel industry. He knew a ton and would talk at length about it. One thing he said that stuck with me was in regards to forklifts. They weigh nearly as much as a car and can run off batteries for 10 or more hours per day, working non-stop. Why cant cars? Because then we dont need all that fuel, thats why.

well, the leaf and volt don't use gas. so basically when you calculate your miles per gallon you have to divide by 0. we all know that only chuck norris can divide by zero

I would like to know what the cost and environmental impact is of the electricity used to power the Volt and Leaf? Would it be better to just have a crappy, slow and tiny car with a ultra efficient and clean gas engine?

yeah, batteries are far from clean, I still think hydrogen is the answer if they can find a cheap way to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen

Actually, a guy names Stan Meyer did just that several years ago.
