I don't know how many of you watched the TV show, "The Colony." I think it was on for only 2 seasons, kinda interesting, very unrealistic, but that said, in season 2 they built a windmill for electricity with mostly bicycle parts. Are there any of you who have built your own windmills? It just seems like, if it could be done with scavenged parts in a rush, how much better of one could be made if you took your time and sought out items to make it better? Right now for us solar is too costly. Any thoughts on this? We really, really want to get off the grid.

Here are a few designs Kvr has dug up. They look pretty doable from a diy perspective, but I do not think they would make you energy independent. But any step in the right direction is a good one. Good luck with your build, and be sure to let us know how it goes if you do take the leap!
