What also looks really good is using a 5 gallon bucket with watering nipples on the bottom. Then using pvc to the bucket so you dont have to walk in poop.

Thats a good point, I might make a setup like that in the coop this summer... Should I filter the rain water or would it be ok as it is?

We don't, we just have it run into the first tank and then divert to the second, you can do that flush diverter, it wouldn't hurt

many of the tile roofs here are asbestos based. i don't collect this water though i don't have any reference that states not to do it, i just don't.
