OK, So my wife and our children have decided to move into the sticks and make a go at living the "homesteading life" as appose to the suburban life we all know and loath.

In this I am researching varieties of chickens, goats, turkeys, horses, and bison (yes bison, but that's a long way off)

So I would like this to be a sort of beginners guide to farm animals. If it's been done already I apologize I did a search but didn't find anything.

Feel free to correct/add info, anecdotes, experiences etc. ( as I am a the ignorant I was referring to the title)

I am looking forward to learning!

Thanks for adding!

I don't know how much help this will be for most people but I found this interesting little tool. http://www.mypetchic.....or-me.aspx

It helps you select the breed of chicken is right for you.

I am thinking we will be getting some Reds. They seem to be fairly hardy and easy to care for. (Ie great for beginners.)

The coup we have is about 10x20 with a coup at one end and open space for foraging on the other. I am not sure how many that will allow us to have but we only need about 4-5 eggs a day at most.

what are your goals for chickens? Meat or eggs? Both? Rhode Island Reds are a good dual breed but will be inefficient with feed useage, you have open season on bacon down there, you hunt at all?

great idea for a thread by the way
