we got Rhode Island Reds and Brahmas the first year, slaughtered them except for the 3 we have left, the next year we got cornish cross. When I was cleaning out the freezer to put the cornish cross in there I found one of our rhode island reds in the freezer yet
it's only a half but that is 5 months of feed on the left versus 10 weeks for the cornish on the right. The difference was quite startling.

I have a barred rock. She was part of the first set we had. I have to say, she's super docile and very cold hardy, but as a dual purpose bird, her egg production was nowhere near what a dedicated layer could produce. Small to medium sized eggs. She is always the 1st layer to slow down in winter and the last to start again in spring. Now in her 3rd year, she's producing 1 to 2 a week.
I also have a golden buff. She's a much more reliable producer and pretty cold hardy. Large eggs and even now in her third year, she still lays 5-6x a week.
The other hens I have are all tetra-tints (tractor supply breed) good layers. Medium sized eggs, pretty regular 5-7 a week in their second year. Very skittish though. Not nearly as docile as the others.
When I get more I'll probably mix it up a bit, but I'll definitely include more golden buffs due to their prolific laying nature.
