With all the recent rat activity I am seeing at the barn I am thinking we need a barn cat, my wife is against the idea. How much does your feline wander?

I don't have one now, but we always had 1 or 2 around when I was growing up. They pretty much just stick to themselves and nap/hunt/leave mouse guts on your porch. :)

Ya go get a few feral cats they catch and give away and your mouse/rat issues will be history.   Just throw them water and food and let them do the rest.  There almost wild so no they are more of a tool than a pet so no vet bills ect ect. :)

Outdoor cats have always been a love-hate issue for me. Barn cats will decimate an area's small game  population.  I remember going to my great uncle's farm to walk fencerows and hunt pheasants and then one year they got 3 barn cats and that was the end of pheasant hunting.

On the other hand, we have two cats now and no problems with mice.  One of the cats spends 80% of her time outside mingling with the neighbor cats, and the other one keeps the house clean of mice.

Yeah, I personally don't like outdoor cats for the most part, we have a few that wander the neighborhood and I get tired of waking up to paw prints on my car

My neighbor has one. Im actually watching it right now while they're away.  It's an awesome cat and it prowls the neighborhood looking for prey.  It probably has a couple square acre area that it hunts. I see it often in my garden where it gets the voles that move in to get all my plants.  Im not a cat person, but for that Im happy to take care of him when they go away for a couple of days.  All I do is put down food in the morning and pick up the empty bowl at night.  Make sure she has water. That's about all the care she needs.

another concern for us is how close we are to the road, already had neighbors cat get hit, I don't think the wife would forgive me if that happened
