With the mild winter we had, the tick problem around us in central NJ is really bad this spring and forecasted to get worse as the summer approaches.
Im considering adding some guinea fowl to our flock of meat birds, laying hens and ducks. Hopefully they'll feast on the ticks, japanese beetles and everything else we get around here.
We only have 2 acres, but I'd let them free range and scour the property for anything they find interesting. I know that they are pretty independent and a lot of people say that they prefer to roost in trees, but Ive read they can be trained to a coop at night with enough encouragement.
Im just looking to see if anyone has some first-hand experience with them. Some concerns are how noisy they are and how far they might range.
I could keep them in the electro-net with the rest of the birds, but that kind of defeats the purpose of letting them go find ticks and other insects all over the property.

a lot of people use them for snake control around here. I never had them, but the complaints I heard were of them flying up onto peoples parked trucks and scratching them to shit. They seemed to always keep close to their house and as a neighbor I never noticed the noise to be excessive.

I have some and im getting more this weekend. we had a recent raccoon invasion and lost a few turkeys and a few guinea.
Guinea are my favorite of all birds, I dont find them noisy compared to my turkeys.
We have ours trained to a tractor that they go into at night we just keep them exclusively in there for the first 8-10 weeks and they get used to it and recognize it as their "safe" space.
Thankfully I took care of the raccoon issue.

Ive been checking Craigslist and I can go pick some up from a guy in Allentown, about an hour away.
I wish I did this sooner, because on Sunday night I found a rash on my thigh, Monday morning I was diagnosed with Lyme's.
So Im on the antibiotics and so far pretty much symptom free. Keeping my fingers crossed....
and probably going to get some hens this weekend.
