Ours dug their own by an out building. They use it everyday. I sprinkle DE in it for a win win

And the monkey presses the button.

yep. recently switched to masonry sand for the summer in the coop. Wife read something about it being cooler on a facebook chicken site (chickenchick or something similar).

easier to clean and is cooler.

And the monkey presses the button.

I havent built one, but it's been on my mind. I was kinda waiting to see if they would scratch one up in the tractor, but they havent yet. I guess I need to get on that.

any tips or pointers?

any concern for it becoming a litter box for neighborhood cats?

Since I move the chicken tractor around I assume they will dig down to dirt if they want it.

EDIT Just read the article. Yeah, we never have that for the chickens. I will see what I can throw together. I have the sand, dirt, and wood ash (wife just cleaned the wood stove for the season), but need to pick up some food grade DE.

Did I tell you guys we bought more chickens? I picked up 5 hens and a rooster -- all Wyndotte/Buff crosses. They have feathers on their feet -- kind of cool. So far the rooster has been a gentleman -- I hope it stays that way. The new hens are smaller than my last remaining original hen but the rooster is already a little bigger.

Anyone have any experience with eating eggs that are fertilized? I have read that they should be refrigerated right away... but should I be expecting a different taste?
