I went out and grabbed the eggs today and I noticed something was eating them. I found some broken shells so I did a check around the building and there was no entry way. The way the skunk got in is currently frozen to the ground, so I knew it was nothing getting in. Quick google says it was probably a chicken due to a calcium deficiency. I also read to cull the offending chicken because it will teach the other chickens to do it as well. Anyone have experience with this happening to them?

I asked my mother about this. She has quite a bit of experience with chickens and said it is indeed calcium. She said that crushed up oyster shells in the feed helps but that it is very hard to get the chicken to break the habit once she has started. She said to add the shells and try harvesting the eggs before she has a chance to get to them.

I was reading about this just the other day, as was stated here, add calcium. They said that if the chicken continued to do it after the additional calcium, then best to get rid of it.
also, I thought this was a great idea, to put your laying baskets on an angle, with a cute at the bottom. When chicken lays egg, it rolls safely away from her reach.
