I have raised chickens in the past, and now my wife is curious about raising some at our new place. She asked the question about snake control. She has NEVER raised farm animals, or poultry before. Please share tips on keeping snakes out of the chicken quarters.

we really don't have a issue with that here, just little garter snakes, do you want to kill them or relocate them?

my wife says kill, I relocate the little ones we have when I find them in the woodpile, and when my wife finds them in the boulders when picking strawberries, oh you should hear that woman scream :)

Well we have what are called chicken snakes here in Texas that eat chicken eggs, so they like to hang out in or near the chickens. They are VERY scary because they get rather large. I have seen them upwards to 6 ft. long. They are not poisonous but when surprised they will strike. I was surprised once while gathering eggs from the hen house's nesting box and up popped a huge chicken snake. Needless to say the eggs, and basket went one direction after I tossed it, and I the other as I stumbled over everything behind me including the chickens that like to follow behind. Not a pretty sight. Look them up on the web to see what they look like. Dont like it, and I know my city raised wife would definately loose interest in all this country stuff if she was surprised. They are known to get under a setting hen and steal eggs as well.

Try a treble fish hook that has been clued to a real egg. . . the fake ceramic do not work and tie off to somewhere in the chicken coop. We have caught quite a few in this way.

One thing to consider is that snakes eat rodents. Black snakes also eat other snakes including poisonous ones.  snakes are very misunderstood and are really beneficial.  if you carry a stick and make a lot of noise the snakes will go away from you.

the only thing that would concern me with the hook method is our egg eater, I still haven't caught it in the act yet, so I guess one of my birds could be caught by it, I mean the thing ticks me off, but I want it to go out on my terms if you know what I'm saying, oh and welcome dani
