a 6ft snake here is still pretty young. i've seen chickens kill snakes here and one of the hens ran off with it to eat while being followed by the rest, trying to get a chunk. as much as i dislike little yapper dogs and would never ever own one under any circumstances, they are excellent for warning, protecting and even killing snakes. i advocate relocating all snakes, and it's a regular thing for me to have cobras 8-12ft and even vipers in the yard. if you don't have a healthy snake population, things get all messed up.

you can also use some natural grasses etc to minimize contact. snakes here don't like lemon grass, they don't like a really sharp grass we have here with a purple flower. name escapes me at the moment but the blades close up when you touch them, however the spines can still draw blood. i can't stand having this grass in my yard here because it takes over and will crowd out nicer grasses. i spend probably 30 minutes or an hour each week hunting this grass down and pulling it out by the roots. my fingers actually have a callous on them now from wrapping my first finger around the base of the root (only place without spines) and pulling it out.

Referring to the "Captain Morgan" trap above, if you don't want to deal with the whole razor blade thing, you an use mouse/rat glue traps instead. Once caught, it's IMPOSSIBLE for a snake to free itself. Then from there, you can kill or release the snake. (vegetable oil breaks down the glue). It is important to note that if you choose to not release the snake, then you need to kill the snake, as they can survive for a VERY long time on the glue boards and it's quite inhumane in my opinion.
Another possible option is a product called Snake Away. It's a mixture of moth balls and sulfur and supposedly repels snakes. It's gotten mixed reviews and results though. Also, not sure how the chickens would be affected by it.

yep, and those 6 and 8 ft versions were down south in the islands where it's more densely populated. now i'm up very close to the laos border, much lower pop density, rice paddies as far as you can see. we'll get some real snakes up here, it's common up here to find 12-15ft king cobras and if you really go out into the sticks, you might just come across an 18footer which is reported to be their upper limit.
the day we moved in here, a group of guys came running down the street towards our house with some barking dogs following them. if you don't speak thai you might have just stuck your head out the gate in time to watch a 10ft snake running away from the group, who were trying to kill it to eat. the snake was already agitated, and striking out to bite anything in its path.
