pretty sad story here in Maine
A Maine family is grieving the loss of their toddler after they say he was exposed to a deadly strain of E. coli at a county fair.
MyFoxBoston.com reported that 20-month-old Colton Guay died Monday after visiting the petting zoo at the Oxford County Fair in Maine, where he was infected with the bacteria E. coli. Some strains of E. coli are harmless, while others can lead to severe anemia and kidney failure. The Guays said Colton died after contracting Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a condition that results from the abnormal destruction of red blood cells.

We have a membership at the local zoo, so we go about once a month, and there's a petting area. Interesting enough, they removed all of the chickens from the petting area because of bird flu. The zoo still has a ton of peacocks that run loose through the zoo, I wonder if they aren't as susceptible to avian flu.
When I was doing an internship with the state health department there was an 8 case outbreak of salmonella in one neighborhood of Detroit. Ended up it was a daycare that all the kids went to that had an iguana. It was the daycare mascot, all the kids handled it, and they never washed their hands. Salmonella is normal GI flora for iguanas.
