Saw this on the news tonight
The San Clemente Island goat has become a rare find over the last quarter century.
Unity College is trying to reverse that trend by raising the babies, also known as kids.
The two year old experiment has become pretty popular.
The school farm stumbled upon the goats while adding animals to its collection.
"We actually got in touch with a local farmer who was getting rid of her goats, so luckily we were able to kind of snatch them up and bring them here to the college to help preserve the breed," said Megan Anderson, Farm Manager.
The kids have also become useful a tool for students wanting to work with animals in their careers.
Workers say they're also fun to raise.
"They're very fun to watch, we call them goat TV when we have them out in the field," said Anderson. "The public especially likes to come and watch them, and obviously babies playing in the grass is pretty adorable."
The hope for the farm is to find homes for these little guys, and continue the cycle.
"These guys could really use more voices, especially locally," said Anderson. "There are only a couple of farms in the state of Maine that raise them, and in order to keep the breed alive, we need other folks that are interested."
The herd is continuing to grow with an addition later this summer.
