I am very involved with horses.
I don't farm with them, but they are the center of my life. Their manure is the main source of my compost. I love horse manure. In fact I love everything about horses! I earn my keep as an applied equine podiatrist, and I do a fair amount of training.
I would love to discuss anything about horses with anyone interest!

My grandparents had horses when I was a child, haven't been around them since. How much room do you need for a horse? I have a friend who's daughter has a horse, but they have to board it because of where they live. He told me they spend about 500 a month for boarding and feed. Is that typical?

The cost of board really depends on the area of the country you live in and what is offered. 500.00is typical in some areas.
There are different opinions on how much space a horse needs. Some say 2 acres,
But I personally feel that five is the absolute minimum. Even then you have to be prepared to buy hay.
It isn't just about the food though. Horses are designed to graze on low quality forage over large areas. A lot of the health problems that modern domestic horses have is from lack of exercise and grazing o too rich pasture.
It is amazing how many over weight horses there are!

thanks spotted, how much hay do you go through in a month?
No me in the summer. It really depends on a lot of factors like how early we get first frost and weather we had a drought. When I do feed hay I go through four bales a day for five horses. My guy eats a blae all by himself!

I've been out trimming horses all week. I love my work. It think a lot about how our life with horses has changed so much in the last century. The industrialmagemchanged everything and within 20 years we went from being dependent on horses for our survival to not needing them at all. Most folks that are involved with horses these days are involved for very different reasons than survival, although most of us do appreciate the fact that if we needed to we could use their power. For some it is shows and ribbons, but for a lot of us it is about the relationship. It is a magical thing to have a trusting relationship with a horse. They test us every step of the way and if we are paying attention, we become better people!
