I'm not a big time homesteader. All I have is about 2/3 an acre. I did plant 20 little fruit trees 6 years ago on my little bit of land. Every year the trees get stripped clean from the raccoons...I get nothing. I started to trap raccoons and got my first 2 last night. I was told to shoot them in the head with a pellet gun. I used a .22 pistol with 22 short CB caps to keep it quiet and not disturb the neighbors. One raccoon took 4 to the head before dying. The other one took 3. I would think .22 short CB caps have more power than a pellet gun? 22 shorts don't auto feed so I have to use it as a single shot which takes lots of time. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!
I think the cb caps are too underpowered. IIRC they only have a muzzle velocity of 600-700 FPS, my gammo pushes out 1250 FPS. I'd go with the .22 long and be one and done. Might want to contact your local LEO about discharging a firearm where you live. Here in Maine it's not an issue if you are disposing of a pest that is destroying your crops or livestock.
How did you capture the racoons? Have a heart trap? If so, don't try and drown them. The gate can come open and you can have a bundle of pissed off animal come flying in your face.
Don't ask me how I know
