The dog was re-homed. The new family doesn't have chickens, never will, etc. They have little kids and an inground electric fence. We think the dog will be very happy there.

Now to look to a less prey driven breed. Any recommendations? We are thinking something smaller than can be inside more and be part of the pack.

I think it really just depends on the training more than anything else, which if you get a pup will be easier to create good habits in them versus breaking bad habits, with that being said, high drive dogs I would stay away from like a JRT, I would look at herd dogs, like a border collie or such, this retriever looks pretty chill with the flock

as far as my dogs, the old man is just to old to care, the gsd, she surprises me leaves the birds alone, but if she sees a wild mallard in the yard she is off like a bullet after them, for the most part she has left our domestic ones alone, once in awhile if she is walking by the pond and she sees them she will scare them into the water. I guess it's because we raised her as a pup around them and had them in our house for the first month. The pug is scared off his own shadow and won't go near them, but he is very personable, but very strong headed. He also the best alarm system of the three. Usually he hears someone come around the house first which sets him off, which then sets off the other two.

Are there any farms around you who breed dogs? Might be a good chance to see how the parents react around other animals.

Here is a pretty long thread on picking a dog

KVR, I've seen that same thread :)

Good to hear your pug is a good alarm. Our needs/requirements have changed somewhat... my wife wants a dog that will stay close to the kids when they are out playing or wondering through the woods. I want a dog that will give me a heads up when there is an animal out and about or someone is walking up our driveway. We both want a smaller dog than the one we had (she was 55 lbs) and will be in the house more. So because it can be in the house more often it doesn't need such a heavy coat. I am trying to find a smaller dog that has a lower prey drive. All I can come up with is a Corgi or some such. I am open to any suggestions.

There are plenty of farms around me but I haven't found many dog breeders except for labs or golden retrievers. It's strange -- there is a huge farm industry all around us but most are huge high dollar corporate farms (at least around the area where I work) and they don't even have dogs.

EDIT My buddy sent me this video when I told him I wanted a smaller dog. We live out in the woods and I know coyotes exist in our forest but I haven't heard them or seen any signs of them. Not sure if a new dog would be outside enough to get eaten. Maybe that is naive.

so, we have had a cat hanging around the last couple days, I walked out today and saw this, he stood there for 15 minutes while the chickens ate, I thought it was kind of cool

^^ That is awesome.

This is my dog.. the mass murderer. He was left at the corner of our road, back roads, state land all around. He was just sitting there when my wife went into town one day.. came back almost 2 hours later and he was STILL sitting in the same spot. :( We've had him for about 1 1/2 years I guess now.
