I think after her dying anyway, I would have opened her up to check and see if you were right... I know... NOT PLEASANT, but at least it may help in the future. Sorry you lost your little hen, always sucks to lose anything whether its a pig, chicken, cow or whatever. I felt the same way over the piglet... ):

The vent of the bird looks pretty bad on all these pics. You didn't say what her vent looked like but if it had been this bad I think you would have said. I'm thinking she was attacked by something that hurt her insides.
no didn't check her crop, reason I think was she was egg bound was she was much bigger than the other birds, the other 3 have slimmed down quite a bit since they have been free ranging, she got bigger, she was slower than the other three and we noticed her waddling the last couple days. Plus her just laying down the previous 12 hours. All tale tell signs of being egg bound. Her bottom was red and swollen like several of the pictures HFF linked above. Only think she could have possibly eaten in the yard that would have made her sick was the rhubarb, but I hadn't seen any of them near. I should have cut her open to check, hopefully don't have to go through it again.
