But why would you want all that space wasted with comb in the jar?

Since you're our resident bee expert, learn me on some bee keepin'!

What do you suggest?

What type of hives does your dad run?

Tips for getting started?

I know next to nothing about honey and bee keeping, but I have always sort of been fascinated by it and thought it would be cool to try.

Im not an expert at all. I mostly just stand there and do what he tells me to do. This summer I was barely there and didnt get to see most of what he did, which sucks, because this was his best year so far.

I keep telling him he should do an AMA here.

But basically there is a screened bottom board and on top of that a deep box called a super. You put the the racks in there minus two of them and dump the bees in, put a thin board on it which has a whole with a bucket of sugar water. The bucket has pin holes in the lid and is turned upside down.

We also put the queen in there at that time, she comes in a small case with a cork in it. We take out the cork and put a small marshmellow in its place. The bees chew her out.

After a few weeks you keep adding supers. The timing of this I do not know.

And that is pretty much it. My dad checks them every other week I guess and makes sure the queen in still in there. Or if she has died to see if they have raised a new one.

Check out Mann Lake.

I need to learn me about these, the commonground fair we had up here this past weekend had a seminar on beekeeping, but I wasn't feeling well and didn't make it, I think our cooperative extension holds classes on beekeeping, I need to research that

My dad had been looking around a lot. I went on Google and found someone local who was into it and sent an email on his behalf. The guy must have been willing to help or at least pointed him in the right direction because after that, he was moving on the supplies.

I asked him to pop in here, hopefully he does. I know a few of you are totally serious about it.

He told me it has cost him a lot of money with little return and people should be ready for that. Lots of capital and from what I gather, its not something you just improvise with. You need the right shit to get it going.
