Animal husbandry is becoming a hot button issue at my house. I had chickens for a year and a half. I was getting great results and really loving it until my wife gave birth to our youngest son last march. The chickens woke her up every morning for a week clucking outside our bedroom window when she was already worn out from feeding the baby all night. Much arguing ensued. In the end my chickens went to my aunts house to join their flock. I changed gears after that focusing on silent animals. It's my goal to grow enough fish and duckweed to be able to trade for eggs, milk, and hopefully pork.

I've heard that they can operate on a goat to remove the voicebox, but I dont know much about it, it seems like it would have to be pretty expensive and kinda cruel. I should call my vet one of these days and see what he thinks.

I would assume, people do it to dogs, I could never do it, like you said, it seems cruel and it would be a shame to remove vocalization from an animal when they enjoy it so much

just dance with them, they'll quiet right down

I am thinking about goats. having to trim their feet seems like a terrible chore... The economics of it seems right, but i am concerned with not having enough browse for them vs. grass. Still researching. It is apparent to me that I will need something or I will be mowing down fields every weekend and that seems like a waste.  I also fear that after I get a bunch of meat goats I will become soft to them and not eat them. And if I were to get more pets it would just be a dog.

Well coming from a goat owner who just had two females kid this spring I can assure you it will/would be hard to butcher them. IMO and at least for me.  The babies ARE like puppies and they want to play and jump around.  I could not imagine raising them to eat.  Crazy I know. Im a softy though so that may be it as well.  haha

Is there a market for organic goat milk?  I read some folks make that work.

Also I didnt read all the thread,if your looking for a good meat source have you looked into rabbit?
