i have been around cattle almost all my life, but not pigs, i have a new small farm, next to my house my other one is 32 miles away. i have been thinks of raising some pigs, i have about 1 to 1 1/2 acres for pigs, some is woods, and will supplemnt feeding with feed. i have a opition of taking some of a barn for housing, all the siding will be replace, and poring a pad inside, so i have many differnt options for the barn, or i was thinking of pouring a concrete pad away from the barn and building something on top of it. i would like pros and cons of both ideas, i have a front end loader, but i was going to feed outside and not in the building.thanks.. the barn is big the rest will be used for cattle and hay storage.
thanks for all replys

i am running new fencing for the pigs 4x4 wire and other new fence for the cattle, there isn't much fencing on there now that why i have many different options, going to run electric at bottom for pigs. and electric also with cattle fence to keep them off it. i have chased my fair share of animals, and after i tore a knee, and replaced that knee later, i don't chase aniamls any more, just fence them in proper, the first time.
i saved money when buying this property, so i am going to fence it for the future not temp. post are going to 6 " wooden post are going to be drove and 2 steel in between . both fence are not cheap wire. . i have been farming quite a long time . i just have never raised pigs. i have ask around a lot i just want some other opinions. my question is, is it better to build a small building , just for pigs to get out of weather, i will have two seperate areas, it will be built on a contrete slab, or my second option is using a section in the barn, and pouring a pad and boxing it in, also 2 seperate areas, the barn will be cheaper, both will be able to be cleaned out by front end loader, just wondering what most people that raise pigs would do? the pigs will be fed outside.
we had a separate area that we raised them in the first 3 years we did, last year was the first year we had our barn and was able to raise them in there, we still started them and finished them in the smaller pen though

it makes it easier to train them on a electric fence and to fatten them up some the last week or so, they really don't need much for a shelter, just a lean to would be fine to get out of the rain and sun, I don't know if I would even put cement down if you go that route.
If cost savings is a big factor, I would just section off the barn, unless you want to utilize that for something else.
With raising our pigs for the first time in the barn last year, one thing I wasn't prepared for was the amount of dust. With them coming in and out all day after rolling in the mud and carrying it into the barn, we got dust everywhere, even up in the loft. Was surprised how much they produced
