anyone seeing this locally? We had some people pushing to ban it from fairs up here last year but haven't heard much about it since, personally I always tried for the greased pole with 100 dollars stapled to the top
SPANISH FORK (ABC4 Utah News) - While hundreds watched children attempt to tackle pigs at the Utah County Fair, protestors urged Fairgoers not to support the activity called "Pig Wrestling".
With lots of squealing and splashing in the mud, costumed kids as young as five try to grab a pig and put it in a barrel Wednesday evening. The event, advertised as "Tons of Fun" on Facebook cost an entry fee of $40 per team of four and offered cash prizes and trophies.
Outside seven protestors said the activity is cruelty to animals, a Class B misdemeanor under Utah State Law.
"Stop pig wrestling. Stop pig wrestling," they chanted while holding signs reading "Cruelty is NOT family fun" and "Give apples, not bruises". Salt Lake City animal rights activist Stephany Alexander organized the protest.
"It traumatizes the pigs," Alexander said. "They have their legs pulled on. They're squealing and running in fear and then they stuff the pig into a giant barrel and then the winning pig usually gets to go to slaughter."
