I don't think I posted about it, but we lost one of our new piglets to illness this week. We bought 4 originally and found one near death just 3 days later which ultimately had to be put down. Needless to say we were less than happy but we chalked it up to experience and went forward. Couple days later we were out and ran into the guy we'd bought them from. He is a nice fellow and wanted to know how piggies were doing so we told him what happened and then picked his brain awhile for things to look for, what he uses on his own pigs etc... To make a long story short, he felt like he sold us a sick pig and offered us a replacement. He offered it for free but we intend to split the cost with him because he seems like an upright guy. Just thought it was refreshing to do business with someone who is honest..... so many people aren't anymore. Have to go after the new one tomorrow, weather permitting. Others are doing well and growing already!
Nice to hear, our breeder bends over backwards for us as well. Living in a small community like you and I do, that is important, word gets around quickly. I knew which breeders and which processors to stay away from because everyone told me their experiences with them, the good and the bad.
Well the pigs seem to be doing ok now after losing the first little one. Everybody is happy and growing and eating like pigs! lol A friend of mine owns a restaurant and offered me 4 buckets every Wednesday of all her veggie scraps and peels. This is great since I know her and know she will not put rotten things in with good things. I think that we may have figured out what happened with the sick pig... we were not aware that the breeder had been feeding them wet mash type feed. We have always preferred the pelleted form because its less waste. I think maybe we put the dry feed out and after he ate, it swelled in his gut or possibly he didn't drink enough and the feed couldn't move through. I'd be interested in hearing opinions on that. Anybody who knows pigs I wish you'd jump in here... At least it can be used as a learning experience...
I personally have never added water to my pigs feed, but I have friends that do. Usually we start them on 3 bags of medicated mash then switch to pig and sow pellets, plus they eat all the grass they can with quite a bit of bananas, doughnuts etc thrown in. Are you going to boil the restaurant scraps? Or is it just scraps from the prep work
