Do you guys all buy your feed for your chickens? We have 3 and we buy 50lb bags of layena pellets and scratch corn. We get 2 to 3 eggs a day. We don't really do breakfast because of schedules. We do have to have a couple breakfast nights a month. Takes no time to get 30 eggs it seems.

But sometimes I wonder if we are ahead of the game factoring the amount of food they eat.

I also give them garden scrap.

we went growth for the first couple months then switched to laying and occasional corn.We also give all veg scrap from the garden and house. Bread etc. Also I juice a lot so the chickens get the byproducts of my juiced veg and fruit. It's quite comical when they come running when they hear me round the corner, I think I'm going to try free ranging some this summer

i think if you have a proper homestead, you shouldn't have to buy any feed for any of the animals as everything should complement something else. that's how i'm planning to expand and manage mine anyway.

living in the tropics there are so many insects for the chickens to scratch up, throw a few hands full of red wigglers in to the chickens and watch them go crazy, same for the fish, same for the garden etc. i grow sweet corn and there are always going to be some ears that aren't any good for the table.

the way i see it, if something i'm spending time and or resources on isn't giving back proportionately to the table or the other animals or garden, then it shouldn't be there anymore.

well i will need a bigger garden then. I also juice and they long the waste from it. Free range is awesome. If i grab a rake they will come running. they know I will over turn something. I made a 16 x 24 pin in my back yard and just gave them feed and scratch. They got kinda slim. When I let them back out the fattened up. We had one big fat white chicken that the other 3 would try to pluck her down to a bloody mess. I build the pen to separate them.

I am thinking of doing rabbits because of limited space. Sadly my fiancee is not on board. I want to raise them for meat. My parents have lots of chickens and they are great for the eggs and meat. I wish I had land like they do.

I am thinking of chickens as well.

What are the down sides of raising chickens?

Also, what kind of chicken is best for a beginner that is a good combination of eggs and meat?

I assume some breeds are better for eggs and others for meat? Lastly, will I need a rooster if I only want eggs?
