Made it over to my breeder today and he showed three piglets. the father is a hereford and the mother is a black, he got her just this year, sorry for the bad pic
three all in one shot
two of them just chilling
they aren't going to be ready for a couple weeks
one side note, my breeders friend was there, who happens to raise bees, I think I just scored some hives and a teacher
Well, when I went to pick them up, he said they would be ready in a week or two. So I gave it two weeks and went to pick them up last night.
On the way there I stopped and picked up some piglet starter and overheard the manager at the farm store mention to someone that the piglets were in the day before and they had several left.
So I drove out to the farm and knocked on the door and the farmer came out and asked if he could help me, I said yep, here to pick up my piglets.
Recognition danced across his face and he said, they aren't ready yet, they are just starting to eat out of the trough, it will probably be another week before they are ready to go. I would really hate for you to lose one because they aren't eating properly.
Do you mind if I look at them? I appreciate your concern, but I've gotten some pretty small pigs in the past and haven't lost one yet. Something just seemed off.
Sure he said, so we walked up to the pen and looked over the wall, one little piggy, two little piggy, three little....
Uh dude, where's the other piglet?
Huh? He said. He looked over and sure enough, where those was suppose to be three, there was now only two. After several minute of cussing and looking around he made the comment someone has been stealing piglets. Really? Maybe it would be better to keep them locked up in the barn then instead of pens in the back field I thought.
He then says, I have another litter over here, that should be ready soon if you are interested in them. They were a tamworth cross. I told him I would stop back in a week and see what the status is.
So I left and called my wife, she wasn't happy, we normally get our pigs the second week of may and it's pushing it to get them to slaughter weight by the end of October, we are almost into the middle of June and don't really want to be dealing with pigs in the middle of winter.
So I stopped back at the feed store and inquired about the piglets I had just heard them talking about a few hours previous, nope all sold, awesome.
So I ran out to the guy who we originally bought piglets from, nope, none.
So I called my buddy John who raises pigs and beef, and asked him if he knew anyone with piglets, he said a guy down the road from him might have some, he raises pigs and beef.
What's his name so I don't look like a moron when I drive out there, I asked.
Don't know, never met the guy.
Wait a minute, you live right down the road from a guy that is into the same side business as you and you never met him?
Nope, and don't worry, you'll look like a moron anyways.
Thanks John.
So I drove out there, knocked on the door, talked to the guy and asked if he had any piglets.
Nope sold out last week, awesome.
So we made small talk for a couple minutes and I asked him if he knew of anyone else that might have piglets.
Well John down the street raises them, he might have some.
I feel like I'm going in circles at this point.
So I run to the gas station and grabbed the penny pincher to see if there was any listed for sale, and not a one.
So my options right now are to wait a week and see if the pignapper came back.
