I know a lot of people are big proponents of the practice instead of getting a puppy, I personally never liked the idea, not knowing how the dog was raised, personality quirks, etc. Then stories like this show up.

I would do it.  I have not heard of any bad experiences from friends that have done it.

A close friend, retired LEO, donates about 20 hrs a week at the SPCA and said they are good at matching the dog to the family. 

Next year (if house is done) we are planning to get a couple of older and decent size dogs...to give them a good home and to deter stupid people...I am a sucker for rescue animals.

 We have had much better luck with rescues vs pure bred over the years.

yeah, we haven't had good luck with purebreds
