So sorry to hear this and know exactly how you're feeling right now. The only thing I can offer is the thought of knowing you did the right thing. He's no longer in pain. He's not suffering any more. As it has been said many times, and for good reason, a dog is a man's best friend. In this case Rufus was your family's soul mate. Your souls were destined to be together and will forever be together.

K, I helped my best friend care for her ten year old lab this past spring and summer. She was suffering from kidney failure and we had to administer iv's 2-3 times a day. At the end of August she let us know that she was done fighting. It was one of the hardest experiences of my life. The grace and eloquence with which you have shared your families pain and love for Rufus is strangely comforting. I hope that you are able to take some comfort in knowing that he is no longer in pain.
