Unless you need fancy I would go with a un coated chain link. It would take a chicken(s) a long time though to peck through the casing. With sun a few summers it might be easier.
Any reason you need to chain link for chickens? Something exciting like Cougars or Blood sucking bats?
I find if you call it experimental farming you can use much cheaper building materials. Use the steel posts (1.5" or 2") grab some caps for them and tie your chicken wire to them? Easy enough also to 45 the tops and enclose a area.
Just a thought, did I mention I am cheap?

Actually, there are several animals up there that would like to dine on chickens. There's no way I could let them free range without expecting heavy losses, pretty much daily. Hawks, Eagles, Fox, Opossum, Bob cats, mountain lions and more.
I found a deal on some used fencing. I can get the coated fencing at the same price as the cheaper non-coated fence. Since the coated fence should last longer, I'm leaning that way. Just didn't want the chickens to eat the coating off of it.
