Yep, especially out beyond the levee system. Fishing camps, etc. But the vast majority are platforms on poles with a stud frame house built on top.

It's really stupid.

Since Katrina, everybody is building on a raised platform, even within city limits.

When I tried to build a pole home back in the '90s, the neighborhood civic association shot me down.

Said it would look too much like a camp.

I like the pole style because you can have a completely open floor plan, and it's one of the most hurricane-resistant(earthquake, too) styles of building.

there was a guy who built one by the river where we are from, I was working for the lumber yard and delivered to him often, the thing was like 10 feet in the air, everyone thought he was crazy,made sense to me, the river flooded every spring

agreed, I like the looks of them as well, almost like living in a tree fort, I always wanted to go back and see how he handled the water supply to the place to kep it from freezing
