One guy I know ran all the plumbing up into the middle of the house; kitchen and bathrooms sharing walls wherever possible. He boxed it in with an insulated stud frame from the ground to the subfloor.

And he used pipe heating cable.

I always thought a a framed in spiral staircase going up the middle for entry and utility run could be kind of cool looking
