I've been looking at these. The issue I have is that while I love the"recycle" aspect the people that have them now charging $500-1000 a piece for them. When you put it all together and price it our you could build an almost identical stick built home for a little less. Correct me if I am wrong (I'd LOOOVE to be). But whenever something becomes "cool" the price goes up for little reason.

Also it seems like of all the great designs out there there's not a whole lot that actually get built (see cost above). This means to me that with all good intentions there's something missing.

Agreed, especially in your neck of the woods, unless you find a refrigerated unit, you would have to frame the interior and insulate or would be roasting in florida. Don't get me wrong, if someone gave me one I would use it in a heart beat. The prices have gone up, most of the prices I have seen for them are 2500-3000. With that being said though, for a remote cabin, I think they would be a good option for security while you are away and such. I think part of the big push for them is peoples interest in upcycling items.

interesting, these guys are saying they can save 30-40% over stick built, I wonder if they are basing that off labor costs

This video is pretty enticing.

Makes me want to go pick up 4-8 shipping containers. :-)

We have a 20 foot one here that is just storage right now. I'd love to mound dirt over it and have it as an above ground cellar. Our water table is too high to bury it. I have an old cellar here but its not close to this house...was built beside the old house.
