I haven't done a side by side comparison but it seems like if you can maintain the air quality in your home without the need for an expensive ERV (both to buy and operate), you'd be better off:

This Indian fellow did some research on how many plants you need to maintain a health atmosphere in your house. If anyone has a green thumb it may be a great option considering how well sealed some newer homes are.

this reminds me, as a kid every house I knew had plants growing in it year round, my step mother had this one huge one that she was constantly tending, can't remember what it was, I never see plants in homes any more

Maybe a ficus? Several friends of mine had one in each bedroom during the winter that they had to care for. I can't keep them alive to save my life but they're good at maintaining air quality.
