Been researching HRV's and ERV's for the new place. Air exchange is a concern with building 'tight', and if we go with the spray foam upstairs it is even more important to be aware of air exchanges.
I know some people advocate for earth tubes. I don't see us going that way, the cost of material and trenching for us would be a lot more $$ than a HRV that I can install.
Being that we are building with very open floor plan and only 1 Bed Room and 1 Bath we only need a small system.
Most everything I have read says that a HRV is appropriate for the colder Northern Climate.
The HRV units are about $600 to $1,100 (the ones I am looking at least). They are pretty simple to install in a new build. Nice.
Thinking this would be money well spent to keep the house 'healthy'
I need to do some research though on building my own set up though. I think I could build one that is more tailored to my set up and needs (important since we are not building very conventional). There are some nice 'fans' to move air in and out that are good prices...could be set up with a simple timer that turns it on and off depending on the needs of the house. The duct work and the vents would be the same regardless...and the fans/timer/etc, are much less expensive, even when I add in a simple filter set up...this makes it cost effective.
Any thoughts or knowledge on this folks???
that's a lot cheaper than I thought, we just ran a 3 inch pipe in an outside wall through our inside wall and stubbed it out at ground level inside the house.
and just trimmed the wainscoting around it
you hardly notice it with the stain on
I wonder if adding another one with a simple cpu fan on each, one inlet, one outlet would be sufficient

yup...we have a dedicated 'pipe' for a supply to come up under the stove for combustion.
We are thinking more about the overall 'air quality' related to whole house air exchanges. I know we could crack a few windows...but this is one thing I am willing to automate a bit.
...are you thinking we don't need to be so concerned about it...I admit, I may be over thinking this 'need'.
(separately, looking at your open framing pic, did you run all 12 ga wire or 14?)
