Thanks for the tips.  For this project, I'm not really going to be stretching the hide/leather.  I'm just concerned about lashing the wood together.  I don't want to screw them, and figured I would use rawhide lashings, but want it to be REALLY tight.  Think heat is necessary for this or just moisture?

If it was me doing the project and I had not bought the hide yet .. I would buy a blacksmith apron or a processed working leather. Spread it out, age it, rough cut edge and age it, punch holes and spray bottle it to being moist/wet.

Using the wood is no problem but I would stretch (till firm) out the leather in a metal form or something stronger first.

I would soak the leather lashings in water, every now and then as it dries I would hit it with a hairdryer. It just helps the fibers to tighten that bit faster and tighter.

Or you could go old school and stretch it out wet and then salt (Hima or a natural salt) the heck out of it and naturally dry the leather.

The tightness of the leather is often determined by the thickness of the leather and if it is subtle creases or not.

lol I mostly wrap things in leather and am self taught.

Spotted-horses thanks for the link to your site. Very cool.

The heat causes it to shrink tight.

Always need more rasps. :)

Sadly, it is not worth shipping in tools though, the 30% tax and shipping costs make it rather pricey.
